Crash ties up Route 3 traffic at the Spotsylvania/Orange county line
By SCOTT SHENK
A three-vehicle crash on State Route 3 at the Spotsylvania-Orange county line yesterday sent two people to the hospital and led to multiple charges for one driver.
The crash happened at 11:30 a.m. when a tractor-trailer headed west on Route 3 slowed for a yellow light at the intersection with Route 20, according to Virginia State Police Sgt. Les Tyler.
A dump truck hauling a trailer with paving equipment was following the tractor-trailer and had to swerve in an attempt to avoid hitting it, Tyler said.
The truck sideswiped the back end of the big rig, then hit a Toyota Highlander in the next lane, according to Tyler.
The drivers of the tractor-trailer and the Toyota were taken to Culpeper Hospital for treatment. Tyler didn't have details on their injuries.
The dump truck driver, Anthony Morris, was charged with several violations, Tyler said.
Trooper C.R. Brennan charged the 32-year-old Stafford County man with reckless driving; driving with a restricted license; having an expired inspection; operating a vehicle and trailer with defective equipment, including brakes; and having an improperly secured load.
Both lanes of Route 3 were closed at the intersection for about 45 minutes, then one lane remained closed until about 3 p.m.
