It took buying 11 acres to give Spotsylvania couple the Halloween display they dreamed of Date published: 10/31/2011 By Rob Hedelt IF YOU try to catch up with Sue Weatherhead and Curtis James between Labor Day and Halloween, it's easy to find them. They're on their 11-acre property off Craig's Church Lane in Spotsylvania County, creating one With 10 different outdoor scenes, a haunted graveyard as big as some real graveyards and a large shed building equipped with everything from a real coffin to a fridge full of body parts, the layout is "We just love Halloween and putting out displays that will give visitors a fun scare," said Weatherhead, who noted that the couple did a smaller-scale set of decorations when they lived in Oak Grove Terrace. Purchasing the land out toward Lake Anna seven years ago, and moving there 21/2 years ago, gave them room to expand the display that takes months to create. It has more than a thousand different figures, creatures or pieces, all specially lighted and/or fog-filled, and it changes from year to year. "This year, zombies were the thing, with the 'Walking Dead' TV show getting so popular, so we added more of them to the mix," said James, a supervisor with Comcast. The display, the couple notes, is seen by two different bunches of people. The main group are folks invited to a party before Halloween, 70-some folks this year who turned out in costume to see the display, share a meal and enjoy the outdoors with a roaring fire and music they can Monster Mash to. Other folks come when when friends and acquaintances call to come out by special request, stopping by the out-of-the-way site for What made up the display this year? There are 10 different outdoor scenes: graveyards for both zombies and vampires, a crazed surgeon center, a "Texas Chainsaw Massacre" scene, haunted pirates and scarecrows, and a tree where huge spiders have enclosed their human victims in webbed cocoons. Oh yes, and a special "Bates Motel" silhouette that uses shadows to re-create the famous shower stabbing scene.
