The Spotsylvania Towne Centre has put together a slate of holiday events aimed at creating a hometown Christmas feel, akin to what you might look for in a traditional downtown area.
Everything kicks off Saturday with the Concert in Lights Kickoff Celebration, a day of family-friendly, free events and performances leading up to the 7:30 p.m. public debut of a musical light show in the mall's outdoor Village area.
The Concert in Lights show is titled, "Ignite the Night," and includes synchronized holiday light displays set to traditional holiday music.
The show is put together by a company called Parker 3D, which has put on similar shows in Calgary, Williamsburg, Tampa and Denver, with some drawing tens of thousands of people.
Intricate holiday light displays in multiple colors are synchronized using proprietary software to holiday music.
Mall spokesman Joe Bell said the entire show should be visible to visitors standing in the outdoor Village Green.
After its debut Saturday, the show will be available free to the public every night of the week through New Year's Eve, with performances at 6:30, 7:30, 8:30 and 9:30 p.m.
"The thinking behind this was the people in the Fredericksburg area have been very good to the merchants at the mall over the past 30 years," Bell said. "We wanted to create a special place where people could come and feel like this is their hometown celebration. We want them to feel like this is part of their Christmas tradition."
Saturday's kickoff festival starts at 11 a.m.
There will be a Family Fun Day with family activities in the Food Court until 3 p.m.
The Spotsylvania Seminoles Cheerleaders will perform between 11 a.m. and noon on the Village Stage.
The North Pole Express Trolley will offer rides between 11:30 a.m. and 9:30 p.m.
Between noon and 8 p.m., a variety of performers will be on the Village stage, including the Stafford Dance Center, the Salem Fields Community Church Dance Group, the University of Mary Washington Philharmonic & Concert Band and the Ambiance band.
At 7 p.m., a color guard, military flyover and the national anthem will lead up to the 7:30 p.m. light show debut. The event will be emceed by actress and comedian Lisa Ann Walter.
