Inez V. Critchley
Well done, thou good and faithful servant enter into joy of the Lord." Matthew 25:21 Retired Salvation Army Capt. Inez V. Critchley, 93, was promoted to glory on Wednesday, Feb. 8, 2012, at The Oaks of Lynchburg. She was born Oct. 6, 1918, to Vera Lyness MacLachlan and Orland John MacLachlan in Fergus, Ontario, Canada. She was the widow of retired Salvation Army Capt. Gordon B. Critchley, to whom she was married for 54 years. Mrs. Critchley had served the Salvation Army with her husband in appointments at the Harbor Light Center in Washington, D.C., and at Camp Happyland in Richardsville, which she fondly referred to as "my favorite place on earth." During retirement she served as the nurse at Camp Happyland for 14 years, and became "everyone's grandma." She moved to Lynchburg in 1993 after her husband's death and was a faithful soldier of the Salvation Army Lynchburg Corps. Mrs. Critchley was a volunteer for Virginia Baptist Hospital, knitting caps for the newborn baby unit. She also knitted and sold dish cloths, and donated all the proceeds to the Salvation Army Children's Home in Mexico. She was a member of the Golden Merrymakers and Lifelighters of Heritage United Methodist Church. In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by son Allen Wayne Critchley and great-granddaughter Tina Marie Critchley. She is survived by children Donald G. Critchley and wife Marian of Triangle, Elizabeth Anne Grant of Woodbridge, David R. Critchley and wife Linda of Pensacola, Fla., Janet C. Cunningham and husband Richard of Forest, and Susan B. Perryman and husband Mark of Fredericksburg; sister Betty M. Abraham of Guelph, Ontario, Canada; 10 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and her best friend, Mary Grace Cunningham. A memorial service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 15, in the chapel of Heritage Funeral Service, 427 Graves Mill Road, Lynchburg, by Lt. Jason Perdieu and Maj. Fred Thornhill. A memorial service will also be conducted at 2 p.m. Monday, Feb. 27, at the Salvation Army Camp Happyland in Richardsville by Lt. Col. Mark Bell and Lt. Jason Perdieu. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial donations be made to Camp Happyland, Attn: The Salvation Army, 2626 Pennsylvania Ave. NW, Washington, D.C. 20037. Mrs. Critchley's family would like to extend their sincere thanks to the staff of The Oaks of Lynchburg for the wonderful care given to their mother. Although she is now living in her heavenly mansion, she will miss her earthly home at The Oaks. Memories and thoughts may be shared with the family at heritagefuneral
