Culpeper native Megan Revis Frederick has announced that she will seek the Republican nomination for commonwealth's attorney in the county.
Frederick is the first announced candidate for a November special election to replace Gary Close, who resigned March 12 after being criticized for his conduct in the murder case against Michael Wayne Hash. A judge in February set aside Hash's conviction in the 1996 slaying of Thelma Scroggins, calling it a "miscarriage of justice."
"Public confidence in our judicial system is based on trust," Frederick said in a news release Wednesday. "Citizens have a right to expect those entrusted with safeguarding justice to do so with honesty and integrity."
Frederick, 40, is a Culpeper High School graduate. She earned her undergraduate degree at Old Dominion University, her master's at Virginia Commonwealth University and her law degree at Regent University.
After passing the bar, Frederick initially worked at a private law firm before becoming an assistant state attorney general under Ken Cuccinelli. Before becoming a lawyer, Frederick worked as a child protective services investigator.
Frederick, who is married to Culpeper native Greg Frederick, now lives in Rixeyville at her family's farm. She has one son, who is in college.
She is the daughter of the late Margie Scott, who was a Culpeper deputy sheriff during the 1990s.
"I will bring the fresh perspective and ethical standards our commonwealth attorney's office needs, restoring trust and ensuring the people of our county are served with integrity," she said in her press release.
The Culpeper County Republican Committee will select its nominee during a mass meeting at 7 p.m. April 26 in the Culpeper High School cafeteria.
