FOR EARTH DAY, a list of Apps
Coolest: Download Mosquito Eco Repeller and your smartphone turns into an ultrasound device emitting 14-20 KHz waves that drive mosquitoes away. Probably also dogs. And since I'm already ignoring radiation risk when I put my phone in my pocket, this shouldn't be a concern. Long-term exposure to ultrasound isn't dangerous. As far as we know. Yet. The app apparently also scares off moths, beetles, praying mantises and small children, all of whom instinctively react as though they're about to be eaten by a bat. So how is this good for the Earth? No chemicals are involved. It's environmentally friendly--unless you're a mosquito, moth, beetle, praying mantis, dog or small child. It's free for Android via AppBrain and Google Play.
Money-saver: People Power helps you cut energy waste and saves you some green while saving the planet. Free for Android via Google Play.
Here are some Earth Day apps suggested by Verizon Wireless, along with my personal commentary:
Automobile Green provides auto news, reviews and links to blogs on green cars. Yawn. Don't bother.
Caron 3R Sustainable Lifestyle: Quick carbon-footprint reference guide. Free for Android. Available through Google Play.
Environmental Education: Save the world in 30 seconds by watching weekly videos. Free for Android via Google Play.
Environmental Quiz: Teach kids about the environment, recycling, animals. Sure. Kids are going to spend time on this instead of Angry Birds Space. Forget about this one unless your kids are really into flash cards.
