The husband and the ex-boyfriend of a 31-year-old Culpeper woman have both been charged with murder in connection with her Oct. 8 shooting death.
Roger Edward Davis, 44, of Catlett was arrested over the weekend and charged with first-degree murder in the death of his wife, Patricia Ann Adams. He was also charged with use of a firearm in the commission of a felony, burglary, shooting in an occupied dwelling and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.
Gary Willie, 50, has been charged with first-degree murder, use of a firearm in the commission of a felony, burglary, aggravated malicious wounding, shooting in an occupied building and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.
Both the husband and the ex-boyfriend were also shot during the strange incident, according to town police spokesman Wally Bunker.
According to Bunker, the dispute began when Adams and Willie broke up on Oct. 7. Police say the next day, Willie and Davis drove together in Davis' car to Adams' home at the Village Apartments in Culpeper and forced their way inside.
Police allege that at some point during the resulting altercation, Willie shot and killed Adams, then shot Davis, partially paralyzing him, before shooting himself in the head.
Because of the complexity of the case and the fact that both men were hospitalized for several months, police had a hard time piecing together the shooting and placing charges.
"It took a significant amount of time for the detectives assigned to the case to gather enough evidence to place charges against both men," said police Capt. Ricky Pinksaw. "We wanted to ensure a thorough investigation for the memory of Ms. Adams and for her family."
A key piece of the evidence puzzle reportedly turned up Friday. After investigators consulted with the commonwealth's attorney's office on Saturday, charges were filed.
"After reviewing the case and considering the new information, acting Commonwealth's Attorney Paul Walther believed there was enough evidence to proceed with prosecution," Pinksaw said.
Willie, who had been a patient at an area nursing home, was served with arrest warrants while being held on unrelated charges at the Central Virginia Regional Jail in Orange.
Davis, who now uses a wheelchair, was staying with relatives in Fauquier County when he was arrested.
