Betty L. Niederkofler, 88, formerly of Berkeley Springs, W.Va., and Hyattsville, Md., died Monday, April 30, 2012, at HeartFields Assisted Living Center.
Born Dec. 12, 1923, in Hartford, Wis., she was a daughter of the late Joseph and Lucy Scharf Licht.
After studying secretarial skills in high school, she left Hartford upon graduation for Washington, D.C., and worked for several years as a secretary in support of the World War II effort. In Washington, she met her husband in the local church choir, Francis M. Niederkofler, a WWII veteran. She thoroughly enjoyed their "piece of heaven," a quaint cabin they built on the Cacapon River in Largent, W.Va. She liked to paint watercolors, read, garden, craft, sing and play the piano.
She was also preceded in death by her siblings, Charles Licht, Floris Licht Rhode and Marie Licht Romer; and one son, David C. Niederkofler of Hyattsville.
She is survived by her loving husband of 61 years, Francis M. Niederkofler; one son, Mark F. Niederkofler of Orlando, Fla.; and one daughter, Mary Beth Algert (and David) of Fredericksburg. She has three grandsons, David C. Algert (and Jessica), Daniel B. Algert (and Lesley) and Zachary R. Algert; one granddaughter, Amelia A. Gosset; and several nephews and great-nieces and -nephews.
Hunter Anderson Funeral Home in Berkeley Springs, W.Va., is handling the arrangements. The family will receive friends from 11 a.m. to noon Saturday, May 5, at St. Vincent dePaul Church in Berkeley Springs, followed by a funeral Mass at 12:30 and burial at Spohrs-Crossroads Cemetery near Berkeley Springs.
