The ALEC agenda: Et tu, Bill Howell?

Having become apprised some time ago of the legislation-by-proxy agenda of the reactionary ALEC organization, and recognizing its intent to subvert democratic institutions in the name of the almighty dollar, it pained me to discover that my own delegate, Speaker William Howell, is mired in its dismal clutch ["Howell defends ALEC group," April 13].

I once had the great pleasure of meeting Mr. Howell in an odd moment.

While driving by his Falmouth office several years ago, I glimpsed him getting out of his car, and stopped to get out and shake his hand.

I appreciated his courage in responsibly representing the public interest, even though I disagree with many of his positions.

I am chagrined to have learned that he has been proactively abetting a group that is not eligible for the privileges of citizenship, nor deserving of having bills surreptitiously submitted in our House of Delegates.

The shadow of Big Business is as ghastly as the specter of Big Government.
