A Fredericksburg woman was charged with reckless driving after police said she accidentally drove her car into a city apartment building shortly before noon Sunday.

No one was injured in the incident at Wellington Woods Apartments on Lafayette Boulevard, said Natatia Bledsoe, spokeswoman for the Fredericksburg Police Department.

Bledsoe said the woman's Volkswagen Passat crashed through a window and a load-bearing wall in a basement apartment occupied at the time by four adults and a 4-year-old child.

Fredericksburg Fire Department officials said the child was struck by some debris, but did not require transport to a hospital. The others were not in the affected room, and the driver also was uninjured.

Bledsoe said the woman accidentally hit the gas pedal rather than the brake when trying to park. In addition to the reckless-driving charge, Orlanda Nunez, 34, of Fredericksburg also was charged with driving without a license, Bledsoe said.

Extricating the car took a while because it landed 3 to 4 feet below ground level, Bledsoe said. A towing company and firefirghters shored up the structure before lifting and removing the car about 1:45 p.m.

The city's Department of Building and Development Services is working with the apartment complex's management to ensure the building is safe. The management is helping the residents of the damaged apartment find a place to stay while repairs are made.
