Two new retailers appear to be heading to Central Park

Two retailers that aren't currently in the Fredericksburg market appear to be making plans to occupy the former Shoppers Food & Pharmacy space in the Central Park shopping center.
An architectural rendering submitted last month to Fredericksburg's Building and Development Services Department indicates that Buy Buy Baby and Christmas Tree Shops plan to occupy the roughly 76,000-square-foot former Shoppers store at 1320 Carl D. Silver Parkway.
Shoppers closed its Central Park store in early 2011, leaving behind one of the largest vacant retail spaces in the region. The space would be broken in two, with Buy Buy Baby to the left (while facing the building).
Bed Bath & Beyond Inc. owns both of the retailers. Buy Buy Baby is a baby-supply store, while Christmas Tree Shops sells a variety of discounted items including home furnishings.
The lease has been in the works for many months. A Bed Bath & Beyond spokeswoman said the company does not discuss potential store locations before leases are finalized.
Should the deal go through, it would be the latest shot in the arm for that stretch of Central Park, which was hammered during the recession by the closings of Shoppers, Borders and Linens 'n Things.
Now all three large spaces appear poised to be filled again. Hobby Lobby is already open in the former Linens 'n Things space, while Barnes & Noble plans a fall opening at the former Borders store. Five Below is also moving its Central Park store to that strip center.
