It is not that I do not find weakness in the system. We are burdened with an obsolete model of schools based upon the needs of an agrarian society. No longer are farm children needed to do daily chores and help with planting and harvesting.
The traditional model for modern schools was made possible by the printing press and the availability of inexpensive books and textbooks. Books and libraries were made available to learners.
Today, the digital world and Internet are changing the patterns of learning and teaching. Social media open a cornucopia
There are fear-mongers like Mr. Wick who write with emotionally laden words.
I frankly do not understand what Mr. Wick's definition of socialism is. Mr. Wick seems to believe that there is a conspiracy among educators to corrupt our children and our society.
Where are the socialist leaders plotting this attack upon America? Where are the evil administrators and teachers eager to corrupt our children? Where are the politicians willing to follow the educators?
I see budget cuts and firing of teachers and cuts in school supplies.
Schools should operate year-round and be open 12 hours each day. This does not mean that children should be in school 12 hours, but variable schedules should allow for more efficient use of school plants and staff.
Our universal public schools for all children are what has made America great. Teachers have done more to make America great than any other profession.
