Fredericksburg Deputy Fire Chief Mike Jones leads a tour of the city's new mobile command center. With computer work stations, a satellite dish, a light tower and a 20-foot extendable camera that can zoom in on distant areas and rotate 360 degrees, the new 35-foot-long Freightliner is an upgrade over the old vehicle, lower right. It can handle a range of problems, from hazardous material spills to fire calls to water main breaks. It also can pick up multiple radio frequencies, which will allow it to be used in neighboring counties. The unit offers state-of-the-art communication and a diesel-powered generator and cost just under $350,000, much of it covered by federal funds.
