Brush catches fire under the Falmouth bridge.
Stafford deals with fire, man stranded in river
A brush fire under the Falmouth bridge kept emergency crews busy for several hours Monday evening.
And while they were battling the blaze, they got a report of an injured person stranded on a small island in the Rappahannock River, near the bridge.
The person had suffered what appeared to be a shoulder injury and needed help getting to shore, said Mark Doyle with Stafford County Fire and Rescue.
He said the injury didn't seem to be life-threatening.
He said it took crews about an hour and a half to douse the fire, which started in the same area as another recent brush fire.
The brush fire started at about 6 p.m. and forced the closure of River Road and one lane of the bridge.
