An assistant superintendent in Georgia will take over leadership of King George County Schools next month.

Monday night, the King George School Board hired Robert Benson as the new superintendent, starting July 1. Benson is now the assistant superintendent of Cobb County schools in Georgia.

Benson will earn $134,400 each year. He will also receive a benefits package including a $425 monthly vehicle allowance; $5,000 annually for annuity or deferred compensation; health and life insurance; and "reasonable cell phone service," according to the four-year contract approved Monday night.

The school division will also provide Benson with up to $10,000 in moving expenses.

Benson's contract lasts until June 30, 2016.

The new superintendent comes to King George from Georgia, but he's no stranger to Virginia education. Benson began his career in Prince William County, first serving as an elementary and high school music teacher and a basketball and soccer coach. He was also assistant principal of Stonewall Jackson High School and principal of C.D. Hylton High School.

He left Prince William County to work in Cobb County and in 2007 was promoted to assistant superintendent for curriculum and instruction. In his latest position as area assistant superintendent, Benson oversaw operations in 18 elementary, middle and high schools.

Starting July 1, Benson will lead King George schools, which include three elementary, one middle and one high school.

Benson's family will relocated to King George with him. His wife, Shelley, has been a preschool and kindergarten teacher in Powder Springs, Ga. Before that, she was a high school art teacher in Prince William County.

They have one son, Samuel, who is in middle school and who loves baseball. He and his father may acclimate to the area pretty easily, as both are Baltimore Orioles fans.
