George M. Gilbert Sr., 84, of Elizabeth City, N.C., formerly of Fredericksburg, died Saturday, June 16, 2012, at his home.
Mr. Gilbert was born in Winston-Salem, N.C.
A career law enforcement officer, he had worked with the Winston-Salem Police Department, as a lieutenant with the Naval Observatory and with the Defense Technical Information Center security guard force at Cameron Station, and retired from security with the Topographical Engineering Center at Fort Belvoir.
A Purple Heart recipient and a veteran of World War II and the Korean War, he had served in the Coast Guard, the Army and the Merchant Marine. Surviving are his wife of 60 years, Judith Lee Iris Gilbert; daughters Donna Lee Gilbert Hudgins of Elizabeth City and Elizabeth Gilbert "Lisa" Stout of Fredericksburg; two sons, Bruce Wayne Gilbert of Chapin, S.C., and George M. Gilbert Jr. of Elizabeth City; and brother Robert W. Gilbert.
