I read the article about retired Marine Lawrence "Reggie" Lucas, who recently received the Congressional Gold Medal for his military service ["Local Marine vet earns top civilian honor," June 17].

I want to applaud Mr. Lucas for his extraordinary achievement. As a youngster, I grew up around Mr. Lucas, and he was a positive role model for me.

My hope is that as word spreads of this high honor, this fine gentleman's life will once again serve as a role model for the current generation of young people.

I would strongly encourage parents to educate their children about the achievements and accomplishments of this man (and the Montfort Point Marines), despite the struggles they had to overcome.
