Two SkillsUSA students earned top-five honors representing Virginia at the National Leadership and Skills Conference in June in Kansas City, Mo.

David Brooks placed fourth of 47 contestants in carpentry. His project included framing stairs with a railing, a floor, and both metal- and wood-stud walls. He had to hang drywall and trim the inside and outside of a window. David was given a set of construction drawings and seven hours to complete the project. He was also interviewed by the judges and completed a written test.

Amy Wood placed fifth of 46 contestants in architectural drafting. Her project was to develop the floor plans, exterior and interior elevations, building section, and door and window schedules for a modern brick veneer residence. She was given a sketch, a list of specifications and seven hours to complete the project using hand sketching and computer-aided drafting techniques. Amy also completed a written test.

Instructors Dan Harding and Bobby Jett and accompanied the students to the conference.
