Alice McGinniss Howland, 94, of King George County died Sunday, Sept. 9, 2012, at Mary Washington Hospital.
Born in Index, she was the daughter of Hampton and Peachie McGinniss.
Mrs. Howland was a native and lifelong resident of King George. She was the widow of Fleet G. Howland and was a caring and loving mother and "Nane." Mrs. Howland taught in elementary schools in King George and Colonial Beach and at Woodland Academy. After her retirement from teaching, she worked in the King George registrar's office.
She was a longtime member of Shiloh Baptist Church, Order of the Eastern Star, Wakefield Chapter 77 in Colonial Beach, the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution and AARP.
She is survived by son Glenwood Howland (Brenda); two daughters, Gloria DeLoach (Dewayne "Chick") and Mary Virginia "Ginny" Powell (Joe), all of King George; six grandchildren, Glenda, Angela, Christopher, Jeffrey, Wendy and Jason; seven great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by granddaughter Lisa Hopper.
The family will receive friends from 5 to 8 p.m., Wednesday, Sept. 12, at Nash & Slaw Funeral Home, King George. The funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 13, at Shiloh Baptist Church, King George, with burial following in the church cemetery. The Rev. Mike Jessee will officiate.
