A Gordonsville man will serve eight years in prison for cutting the throat of his mother's boyfriend last year.

Elijah Blue Burnley, 31, was sentenced Wednesday in Louisa County Circuit Court to 20 years in prison, with 12 years suspended. He pleaded guilty in June to aggravated malicious wounding.

The victim, who has a scar on his neck, survived his injuries.

Louisa County deputies and state police responded to an emergency call at a home on West Green Springs Road in Gordonsville about 9:20 p.m. on Aug. 18, 2011.

When officers arrived, they found the then-49-year-old man with a severe laceration to his throat. He was flown to U.Va. Medical Center, where he was treated and later released, police said.

During trial, evidence was presented that suggested Burnley and his mother were having an argument and he took it out on her boyfriend.

Louisa Commonwealth's Attorney Rusty McGuire said the victim's "miraculous recovery" was credited to his girlfriend, who held a towel over his wound until an ambulance arrived.
