Mrs. Anna Bertie Ashley Stewart, 93, of Mount Pleasant, S.C., formerly of Spotsylvania County, died Wednesday, Sept. 12, 2012.
She was born Dec. 3, 1918, in Charleston, W.Va., the daughter of Lovell Maxwell and Nova Mae Sevy Ashley.
She met her future husband, Richard Henry Stewart, at the end of World War II. They married on Nov. 27, 1946, and eventually settled in the Todds Tavern area, spending 64 years together until his death on Sept. 23, 2011.
Anna was a warm and loving woman, beloved by her family and friends. She was employed in the finance department at NASA Langley Research Center at Langley Air Force Base in Hampton in the 1950s and early 1960s. After her retirement she cherished her life as a homemaker. Her hobbies included gardening, sewing, quilting and the latest crafting trends. She was an excellent cook.
She is survived by two sons and their wives, Richard and Pat Stewart of Virginia Beach and Tom and Janice Stewart of Mount Pleasant; four grandchildren; brother and sister-in-law Milton and Virginia Ashley of Spotsylvania; and brother John Ashley of Ashtabula, Ohio.
In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by her sister, Leona; brothers Frank and Harvey; and sister-in-law and close friend Agnes Whitlock.
The family will receive friends Friday, Sept. 14, from 6 to 8 p.m. at Covenant Funeral Service, Fredericksburg. A graveside service will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 15, at Sunset Memorial Gardens in Fredericksburg.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Goshen Baptist Church, 9800 Gordon Road, Spotsylvania, Va. 22553.
