Even in the midst of a political campaign, decency should prevail. John McCain, in the heat of battle, showed himself to be a decent, upright American who just happened to disagree with his opponent. He had the bad judgment, however, of choosing the template of the modern right-wing radical for a running mate. That diminished him.
Today, Republicans have concentrated their efforts in attempting to make the president something other than an American; some foreigner without an understanding of America or American values. John Sununu even suggested that the president "needs to learn to be an American."
Romney has implied that the president is from somewhere other than America, and as such "sympathizes" with and "appeases" America's enemies. He implied that the president would remove God from our money, although the president has never uttered one syllable suggesting such a thing.
Romney, Ryan, House Majority Leader Eric Cantor, and a great part of the Republican membership have moved the party to the extreme right. They are destroying the GOP. Unless decent Republicans move to the rescue, the party will die and be displaced by the monster that now roars.
The only chance for survival the Republicans Party has is for its moderates to temporarily become conservative Democrats and help to slay the evil in their party in order to be able to raise it up again, like a phoenix, from soul-cleansing ashes.
But will they have the courage? Ronald Wilson Reagan would.
