Frank J. Shelton

Frank J. Shelton, 94, of Falmouth died Thursday, Sept. 20, 2012.

He was born May 18, 1918, to Martin and Gertrude Shelton of Falmouth. He was a member of Falmouth Baptist Church and a trustee of Falmouth Cemetery.

Mr. Shelton worked for Sunshine Laundry in Fredericksburg and Fauquier Laundry in Warrenton, where he met and married Sadie P. Laing. With brother Willie and father Martin, he opened Falmouth Cleaners in 1946.

In 1960 he opened Quick Clean Self Service Laundry and operated it until his retirement in 1986. The laundry still operates today on Lafayette Boulevard with a new owner and name.

For many years, including retirement, he enjoyed raising ponies, other farm animals and crops. To the joy of many children, his ponies participated in parades, shows and pony rides.

Mr. Shelton is survived by his son, Frank J. Shelton Jr. and his wife, Gaye; three grandchildren, Crissy Kendall and Chris and Cameron Shelton and their wives, Kate and Kelly; four great-grandchildren, Jackson and Hayden Kendall and Sarah and Robert Shelton; sister-in-law Grace Shelton; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was predeceased by his wife, Sadie; brothers Adron, Willie and Johnny; and his sisters, Beulah Jones, Sadie Bourne and Ethel Brooks.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 22, at Covenant Funeral Service, Fredericksburg.

A service will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 23, at Falmouth Baptist Church. Burial will follow in Falmouth Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Falmouth Cemetery, 2220 Warrenton Road, Fredericksburg, Va. 22406; or Union Church Preservation Project, Attn: Lenetta Schools, 305 King St., Fredericksburg, Va. 22405.
