Regarding the backyard chicken issue in Fredericksburg, before people start keeping egg-laying chickens in their backyards they need to think about what happens to chickens before and after their productive lives.
Half of all chicks hatched are male but are considered useless and are suffocated or tossed alive into grinders.
The average life span for chickens is 10 to 15 years, but their best egg production is during the first two years; after that they lay fewer eggs per week until they taper off production entirely.
Will people be willing to let these chickens live out the rest of their natural lives, feeding and sheltering them and paying for veterinary care if they no longer lay eggs? If not, they must be euthanized or sent to a slaughterhouse.
Please think these issues through if you and your children care about animals.
