James F. Merritt, 87, of Fredericksburg died Friday, Oct. 19, 2012, at Mary Washington Hospital.
Mr. Merritt was originally from Moselle, Miss., and was raised on a family farm. Mr. Merritt proudly served his country in World War II as a Marine in the Pacific Theater.
Mr. Merritt was a member and deacon of Hull's Memorial Baptist Church for many years. He worked for 41 years at Dominion Virginia Power; 12 years at Fredericksburg Hardware; and three years at Earl's True Value Hardware.
Survivors include his wife of 62 years, Nettie "Jackie" Merritt of Fredericksburg; son Travis Merritt and his wife, Patty, of Fredericksburg; daughter Donna Merritt Elliott and her husband, Bill, of Fredericksburg; two sisters, Cecile Camera of Westfield, N.J., and Cora Jean Jefcoat of Little Mountain, S.C.; two grandchildren, Jacob Elliott and Katharine Merritt; four great-grandchildren, Theodore DiMeglio, Lilith DiMeglio, Julia Coelho and Emmaline Coelho; and numerous nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday, Oct. 22, at Covenant Funeral Service, Fredericksburg.
A funeral will be held at noon Tuesday, Oct. 23, at the funeral home chapel. Interment will follow in Oak Hill Cemetery.
