Whether you believe that a traffic signal or a roundabout is the solution to the Dahlgren-Owens intersection in King George County, a great many people in this community do not believe that adding turn lanes in both directions is the answer.
It is apparent that only one supervisor is listening to the residents and businesses of this community, willing to stand up to VDOT, and seeking the opinions of those with the understanding of the nuances of the roads in this community.
Ray Newton, the King George County school bus director of transportation, had the following comments regarding the addition of turn lanes to the intersection:
"These changes would continue to restrict our turning ability and would possibly enhance an already dangerous intersection by vehicles attempting to cross five lanes of traffic in an attempt to turn left on Dahlgren Road from either Owens Drive or Windsor Drive. Adding turning lanes in this area would also impact the safety for school buses stopping to load discharge students."
Is just making sure we "spend all the money" reason to impose an unwanted and ineffective solution on the residents of King George?
I'm glad we have one supervisor who is willing to stand in front of the bulldozers for us.
