Historic church, gas station don't mix

The Free Lance-Star states that Spotsylvania is in the process of allowing another Sheetz near the intersection of U.S. Route 1 and Massaponax Church Road ["Spotsy planners OK Sheetz station near church," October 4]. The Sheetz station should not be built because of the historic importance of Massaponax Baptist Church. In addition, right across from the church is a FasMart.

Massaponax Baptist Church was built in 1859. It was used as a hospital during the Civil War, and Ulysses S. Grant met there with his top generals after the Battle of Spotsylvania Courthouse. These facts caused the site to become registered on the National Register of Historical Places.

Today, 153 years later, Spotsylvania County wants to allow a Sheetz right next to the site. Please understand there is a FasMart literally right across the parking lot of the church. People do not need another store with gas pumps.

Allowing the building of a Sheetz would be a really deleterious choice given the significance of Massaponax Baptist Church.
