A tied vote during a Stafford County School Board meeting Monday night drove home the importance of filling an empty seat on the board.
That seat has been vacant since Doreen Phillips resigned on Nov. 1, and officials hope to fill the seat soon.
Today is the deadline for applicants for the Hartwood District seat on the board.
Phillips left the board after questions arose about whether she still lived in Stafford. Phillips had changed her address with the Board of Elections this summer, listing a locale in Fredericksburg,
The board has 45 days from Phillips' resignation to find a replacement.
Board members will meet in closed session on Nov. 27 to discuss the applicants, and will hold public interviews on Dec. 4 at 7 p.m. If more interviews are needed, the board will hold them on Dec. 6 at 6 p.m.
Anyone who wants to be considered for the position has until 4:30 p.m. today to apply. To qualify, a resident must be a registered voter in the Hartwood District.
The applicant should submit a letter of interest and a resume.
