"SILVER LININGS PLAYBOOK" (PG)

HHH

BRADLEY COOPER, JENNIFER LAWRENCE, ROBERT DE NIRO, CHRIS TUCKER

Though it takes a while to find its footing, this film about a young man struggling with his bipolar condition succeeds because of a sensitive script and strong performances.

It's hard to make a film that's serious and funny involving mental illness, but director David O. Russell pulls it off.

He gets a lot of help via strong and measured performances from leads Bradley Cooper and Jennifer Lawrence, the latter who is especially talented and makes her troubled Tiffany not just compelling, but captivating.

Toss in the great Robert De Niro as a father and bookie with his own odd quirks and Chris Tucker as a friend from the institution, and it all just comes together beautifully.

When Pat (Cooper) gets home from being institutionalized following a life-changing incident with his wife, life is a challenge.

He's still working through his issues when he meets Tiffany, who has her own baggage to sort through. The spark between the two characters ignites the film, and pushes it to an inspirational end.

Rated R for language and some sexual content/nudity. 122 min. [PV]

"THE TWILIGHT SAGA: BREAKING DAWN, PART 2" (PG-13)

HH

KRISTEN STEWART, ROBERT PATTINSON, TAYLOR LAUTNER, PETER FACINELLI

If you haven't been into the films and books before now, this final chapter in the Twilight saga probably won't sink its fangs into you.

But if you have followed the popular supernatural story of werewolves and vampires, this movie will finish things out nicely.

It's a long buildup to a coming battle because Bella, now a vampire, and Edward have a daughter who's part human and part vampire: a no-no as far as the race's rulers are concerned.

Fans will get some nice moments between the two lovers at the core of all this, as well as a moving effort by Edward's family to recruit allies to face the dreaded Volturi.

There's even a neat twist near the end many won't see coming.

Rated PG-13 for sequences of violence including disturbing images, some sensuality and partial nudity. 116 min. [MC, PV, RA]
