A Louisa County man was sentenced to more than 13 years in prison on three felony convictions.
Kenneth Neal Smith, 48, of Mineral was convicted in Louisa County Circuit Court in September of malicious wounding, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon and a probation violation.
The first two charges stem from an April 14 incident in which a man was pistol-whipped during a confrontation. The beating resulted in thousands of dollars in medical bills and permanent scarring, said Louisa Commonwealth's Attorney Rusty McGuire.
The probation violation charge was for a previous conviction for failing to register as a sex offender, McGuire said.
Smith denied the incident took place, but after hearing the evidence, Judge John R. Cullen found him guilty.
Smith, who served 10 years in prison for a 1998 rape conviction in Charlottesville, testified he didn't need to register as a sex offender because he did not commit the rape.
Smith was sentenced to 13 years and four months, which is on the high end of the sentencing guidelines.
