Harlan Charles "Big Daddy" Rhan, 46, of Spotsylvania County passed away Sunday, Dec. 2, 2012, at Mary Washington Hospital.
Mr. Rhan was the president of the Band Parents Association at Chancellor High School and a member of the International Organization of Black Security Executives. He was the ex-captain of Hose Company No. 5 of the Freeport, N.Y., Fire Department and president of the state champion Freeport Fire Department Band for many years. Mr. Rhan was a great cook and jazz drummer. He was active with the Boy Scouts and attended St. Mary Catholic Church. Harlan also worked for Kohl's as the district loss-prevention manager of area 24, where he was loved and respected by many.
Survivors include his wife of 20 years, Charmaine Rhan; sons Charles, Daniel and Courtney Rhan; parents Harry and Marilyn Rhan; brother Andrew Rhan; aunts Eleanor George, Carole Major and June Leysath; special uncle Louis Leysath and friend Eddie Cox; and numerous cousins.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 6, at Covenant Funeral Service, Fredericksburg.
A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Friday, Dec. 7, at St. Mary Catholic Church. Interment will be in Sunset Memorial Gardens.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in his name to the United Negro College Fund, 1444 I St. NW, No. 500, Washington, D.C. 20005.
