John Fairbairn, 82, of Lake of the Woods passed away Friday, Dec. 7, 2012, at Mary Washington Hospital.
John was born in Detroit on April 10, 1930, the son of Henry Edward and Mary Marshall Kidd. He was preceded in death by his parents and sister Catherine Reed Talsma.
He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Wilma: two daughters, Debra Marie Collier of Alexandria and Susan Gene (Capie) Fairbairn-Morton of Lake of the Woods: three grandchildren, Taylor Collier and Ainsley and Ian Lockhart; brother-in-law Ray Talsma, sister-in-law Georgia Luke; nieces and nephews Gary (Lynn) Talsma, David (Denise) Talsma. Linda (Steve) Blackmer, Lisa Myers, Keith (Mary Lou) Provost, Linda (Daryl) Henson, Ruby (Ron) Royer, Carl (Suzanne) Hoffman, Carol (Carl) Zienert, Pam (Terry) May, Bob (Mary) Riley and Robin (Al) Soboleski; several great-nieces and -nephews; and Tina McElroy, who was like a daughter.
John served in both the Naval Reserve and the Army. He retired after 32 years as a captain in the Detroit Fire Department.
He loved sports and was a champion racquet ball player and water skier. He fulfilled a dream of living on a golf course when he retired and moved to Lake of the Woods. He was a gourmet cook and loved cooking for his family and friends.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 5, 2013, at Lake of the Woods Church, Locust Grove.
