John Joseph Sherwood, 82, of Ruther Glen passed away Sunday, Dec. 9, 2012, at VA Medical Center in Lake City, Fla.
He was born in Philadelphia to the late Morris and Ivy Smith Schurowitz.
He was a loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather who spent many years dedicating his time to the Boy Scouts of America as a troop leader. He also worked diligently to help establish the National Historic Trail, the Barefoot Mailman, that originally ran from Jacksonville, Fla., to Miami.
He will be deeply missed by the lives he touched. He was preceded in death by his parents; his sister, Esther Miriam Schurowitz; and son Stephen Sherwood.
Survivors include his devoted wife of 35 years, Patricia Sherwood of Ruther Glen; sons Eugene (Nancy) Sherwood of Charlottesville and Scott (Diane) Sherwood of Cooper City, Fla.; daughters Francine Sherwood of Coral Springs, Fla., Sarah Reynolds of Folkston, Ga., and Wendy (Cully) Kieckhafer of Lake City; brother Jay Schurowitz of Colorado Springs, Colo.; 12 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
A funeral was held on Tuesday, Dec. 11, at Bethel United Methodist Church, with Pastor Deborah McKown officiating. Interment followed on Wednesday, Dec. 12, in Beth David Memorial Gardens, Hollywood, Fla.
Gateway-Forest Lawn Funeral Home, Lake City, Fla., handled the arrangements.
