When I was a boy, authorities were concerned about the proliferation of zip guns, handmade weapons used by street gangs. Then the problem was Saturday-night specials, cheap handguns preferred by small-time crooks. Today, we face an abundance of assault rifles, firearms that can kill a dozen people in seconds.
We can thank the National Rifle Association for this deadly progression. Its unrelenting resistance to keeping guns out of the hands of criminals and psychopaths has brought us to a place where seven mass shootings have occurred in the past year alone.
When will we stop the insanity?
