David Garth Viar Sr., 84, passed away Sunday, Dec. 30, 2012, at his home, surrounded by his family.
Garth was born Sept. 6, 1928, in Alexandria, to William C. and Rowena Wood Viar.
He married Sylvia Lloyd on Jan. 4, 1946, in Rockville, Md.
He was well-known in the horse show circuit in Northern Virginia in the late '40s and won the Virginia Governor's Cup for high jumpers with his horse HiJack.
He was later self-employed as a trade show manager.
He is survived by his wife, Sylvia; four sons, David G. Jr. and wife Karen of Centreville, William C. II of Dale City, Stephen D. and wife Michele of Chantilly and Philip A. and wife Louise of Dale City; four daughters, Kathleen and husband Robert Williams of Locust Grove; Christine and husband Dennis Lambert of Burke, Patricia and husband Elbert Smith of Locust Grove and Sandra and husband Brent Steighner of Midlothian; sister Mae Coates Ellis; 26 grandchildren; and 31 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and brother Claude M. Viar.
The family will receive friends at Laurel Hill Funeral Home from 11 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 3, 2013, until the funeral at 1 p.m. Interment will be at 11 a.m. Friday, Jan. 4, in Mount Comfort Cemetery in Alexandria.
