These babies will never live or grow up, either

Sadly, another mass shooting has occurred in our county, this time involving very young children. The murder of innocent elementary students in Newtown has hit the nation far harder than other similar tragedies. As the father of four children, I cannot begin to fathom the pain and grief these parents are facing.

The outpouring of support and calls for action to prevent future shootings has been well documented. Unfortunately, a far greater tragedy occurs everyday, and America sits by and does little to prevent it. According to the New England Journal of Medicine, more than 3,000 abortions occur everyday in the U.S. This is a staggering figure--more than 1.2 million children, discarded each year. Like the children of Newtown, these babies will never have the chance to grow up, attend school, get married, have children of their own, and live, productive lives.

Since Roe v. Wade in 1973, more than 55 million abortions have been performed in the U.S. Many of America's social and economic problems are rooted in abortion and the breakdown of the traditional family. We have gone from a nation that once placed family above all else to a nation that places emphasis on self-reliance and material possessions. We once relied on family, neighbors, and our community to help us in times of need. Now, we rely on government to solve our problems and expect to receive unlimited entitlements without having to contribute. We defend obscure plants, insects, and other environmental causes while discarding human life with reckless abandonment. If we devalue life and murder our unborn children, it is no wonder America's moral compass is spinning out of control.

While I applaud and support efforts to prevent another mass shooting from occurring, it is time for America to wake up, take a stand, and protect all of God's children--living and unborn.
