Police have arrested the suspect in the fatal hit-and-run crash on U.S. 17 just before Christmas.
Virginia State Police said a tip led authorities in the town of Culpeper to Diego Vazquez Mendoza, who taken into custody without incident Wednesday. The 32-year-old Culpeper County resident is in the Fauquier County Adult Detention Center without bond.
The incident happened shortly after 6 p.m. on Dec. 23 in Fauquier when a Ford F-150 rear-ended a southbound 2004 Scion, state police said. Police say they believe Mendoza was driving the pickup and fled the scene after the crash.
The Scion driver, Douglas Rabren, 58, of Stafford County, died at the scene. A passenger, Debra Rabren, 59, was taken to Inova Fairfax Hospital with serious injuries.
The driver in another car involved in the incident was unharmed.
Douglas Rabren was a retired Army colonel who worked for a government contractor in Fairfax County. In addition to his wife, he is survived by two sons and two grandchildren.
