Here are some odds and ends from the world of Fredericksburg-area business:
The University of Mary Washington's School of Business and the Fredericksburg Regional Alliance will hold a "speed networking" event Feb. 5 from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at the Anderson Center across from Eagle Village. The event will give the local business community a chance to meet juniors and seniors in UMW's College of Business, and allow students to practice networking skills. People who are interested should contact FRA executive Linwood Thomas.
Virginia Gov. Bob McDonnell has appointed Bill Vakos III, president of W.J. Vakos & Co., to the board of the Virginia College Building Authority. The organization helps Virginia colleges with financing for capital projects and equipment.
Jennifer Graham has been named as a partner in the Fredericksburg-based environmental consulting firm Marstel-Day LLC. Graham joined Marstel-Day's Fredericksburg office in August 2009. She manages the company's Air Force portfolio.
The UMW Center for Economic Development, Fredericksburg Regional Chamber of Commerce and UMW College of Business will begin their yearlong Business 101 Seminar Series on Jan. 18 with Accounting 101, presented by Gladys Gomez, lecturer of accounting in UMW's College of Business. The series will be taught by UMW faculty members and offered the third Friday of each month through the end of the year. More details and registration information are available on the Chamber website.
The Fredericksburg Area Builders Association has started a new service that helps builders navigate through the permitting process with local governments. The service is open to both members and non-members, for residential and commercial permits.
