A Louisa County woman pleaded guilty Monday to five felony counts of embezzlement.

Holly R. Bennett-Martinski of Bumpass handled the books for three small businesses from 2008 and 2011 and used popular accounting software to pay each company's bills, Louisa Commonwealth Attorney Rusty McGuire said on Wednesday.

The billing appeared legitimate, but an employee began to get suspicious about the company's profits and hired an auditor, he said.

Martinski immediately resigned her position, McGuire said.

The auditor followed a paper trail and found that checks had been written to Martinski and her husband totaling $187,714.67.

"In these tough economic times, businesses are just trying to stay afloat," McGuire said after the guilty verdict.

"To know one of the people that you trusted with the keys to your castle is robbing you is heartbreaking."

Martinski's next court appearance is scheduled for April 14.
