Robert W. Budion

Robert Walter "Bob" Budion, 85, of Spotsylvania County passed away with his family by his side on Thursday, Jan. 31, 2013, at Mary Washington Hospital receiving the blessing of eternal life in the Kingdom of God and returning to the side of his loving wife, Mildred.

Born and raised in Brooklyn, N.Y., Bob served honorably as a corpsman in the U.S. Navy from April 1945 to December 1946. He tended to the ill and wounded with great care and empathy.

He went on to serve as a New York City police officer for 30 years. As the doorman at New York City Hall for over 16 years, Bob helped to protect four mayors, and greeted celebrities from around the world.

Bob was very much a family man. With his wife, Mildred, he enjoyed a wonderful life filled with family and friends. Bob and Millie were providers of many parties during their 60 years together. They enjoyed the company of their friends, family and many acquaintances, whether it was an ordinary day or special occasion.

After their retirement, Bob and Millie moved to Virginia and built their dream home, continuing to entertain family and both old and new friends for every holiday, including St. Patrick's Day, Fourth of July and Christmas. Bob and Mildred especially loved Christmas, and their house was decorated like a winter wonderland each year. Bob was a great artist and craftsman. He made many beautiful pieces for his children and grandchildren ranging from character cutouts to dollhouses.

Bob leaves behind his loving daughters, Mary Ann Oldis, Carol Polis and her husband, John, Kathleen Beck and her husband, Robert; his loving nephew, but truly in his heart a "son," Stephen Castellani and his wife, Kathy; his adoring grandchildren, Christine Fowlkes and her husband, Aaron, Janet Monaco and her husband, Ciro, Meghan Oldis, Gregory, Daniel, David and Emily Beck; and his great-grandchildren, Connor and Caroline Fowlkes.

He is also survived by many valued friends, who include Irene Lewandowski, Bill Peters and Barry Marshall.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 5, 2013, at Covenant Funeral Service, Fredericksburg. A prayer service will follow at 7:30 p.m.

A funeral Mass will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 6, at St. Patrick's Catholic Church. Interment will follow the Mass at 1 p.m. in Quantico National Cemetery.
