James J. Miller

James Judson "Jim" Miller, 84, of Fredericksburg passed away Saturday, Aug. 31, 2013.

He was born Dec. 1, 1928, in Salisbury, N.C.

Jim served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War. After serving in the Navy, he started his career as an electrical engineer. In 1963, Jim helped form Vega Precision Labs in Vienna, Va. He retired as vice president of engineering and operations in 1995 from Herley Industries in Lancaster, Pa. Jim was instrumental in the original design and development of the family of transponders still being produced today.

He enjoyed woodworking, Western movies and time spent with his grandchildren. Jim was a devoted husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather.

He is survived by his wife, Dorothy of Fredericksburg; two daughters, Jeri Prosser (Jim) of Chesapeake and Tracie Berry (Chuck) of Ashburn; his grandchildren, Matthew Justus (Katie), Robyn Latta (Mitchell), Charlie Berry and Corey Berry; and one great-grandchild, Parker Lynn Latta. Survivors also include his brother, Ernest Miller (Jane) of Cary, N.C., and his sister, Zeta Smith, of Salisbury, N.C.

Jim was preceded in death by his parents, E.E. and Agatha Eller Miller.

A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 7, at Johnson Funeral Home, Locust Grove. Interment will be held at a later date at Arlington National Cemetery.
