Norman L. Gilbert IV

Norman Lester Gilbert IV, 33, of Fredericksburg passed away unexpectedly Thursday, Sept. 12, 2013, at his residence.

Norm was born on Sept. 3, 1980, in Coronado, Calif., to James and the late Kim Gilbert. Norm's mom recently passed after a long illness on Aug. 23.

Norm graduated from Chancellor High School with an advanced degree. He was an avid sports enthusiast and played basketball in high school and in many leagues in the county. He was taught to be an excellent bridge player by his grandfather, which was an unusual skill for his age. Using the memorization and card counting techniques learned in bridge, and his math skills, Norm became a fierce competitor in Texas Hold'em tournaments and games.

He is remembered on social media by his many friends as being "funny, hilarious, a good dude and being able to bring a smile to your face." Norm will be missed dearly by his family.

Norm is survived by his sisters, Pauline Stanley, and Jimmae, Sarah and Shannen Gilbert; and parents James and Mae Gilbert.

A memorial service will be held at noon, Sunday, Sept. 15, at Covenant Funeral Service, 4801 Jefferson Davis Highway, Fredericksburg, VA 22408.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Rappahannock Area Community Services Board, 600 Jackson St., Fredericksburg, VA 22401.
