Lionel B. Johnson

Lionel Barbour Johnson, 85, of Unionville died Wednesday, Nov. 6, 2013.

Born Sept. 16, 1928, in Orange, he was the son of the late James Angus Johnson and Ethel Carpenter Johnson.

Lionel was the owner and operator of Johnson Garage, which opened in 1949 in Unionville. In 1964 and 1965, he raced in the Grand National Series, where he finished 10th in the Firecracker 400 at Daytona and also finished in the Southern 500 at Darlington.

Lionel is survived by his wife, Mary S. Johnson of Unionville; three sons, Lionel "Jabo" A. Johnson and wife Yvonne of Fredericksburg, Gary W. Johnson of Unionville and Larry R. Johnson and wife Pam of Unionville: six grandchildren, Kristi Metheney and husband Nelson, Temple Herlong and husband Chris, Jamie Oller, Jory Johnson, Larry "L.B.B." Johnson and wife Shelly, and David Rhoades; and several great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 7 p.m. Friday, Nov. 9, at Preddy Funeral Home, 250 W. Main St., Orange, VA 22960.

A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 9, at Graham Cemetery in Orange. The Rev. David Knighton will officiate.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Orange County Fire and EMS, Box 111, Orange, VA 22960; or the Orange County Animal Shelter, 11362 Porter Road, Orange, VA 22960.
