Herbert A. Tryon

Herbert Allen Tryon, 89, of Stafford County died Sunday, Nov. 17, 2013, at Heartfields of Fredericksburg.

Herbert was born in New Haven, Conn., on Nov. 30, 1923. He married his wife, Eleanor, on Sept. 15, 1943. They were happily married for 67 years until her death in June 2010.

Herbert was a corporal in the Army and served as an engineer in the Pacific during World War II. Following his discharge from the Army, he used the GI Bill to earn a degree. He then worked for General Foods Corp. He retired from General Foods at the age of 69, after working for the company for 45 years. During his retirement years, Herbert and Eleanor enjoyed traveling to many different vacation spots and attending baseball and hockey games together.

Herbert lived an impactful life as a coach at many different levels and sports. He was a founding member and the first president of the Bowie Hockey Club, coached the Navy Club hockey team and served as a coach of youth football and baseball teams in Maryland for many years.

He is survived by three children, Kathleen Soli, Betsy Tryon and David Tryon and his wife, Nancy; seven grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.

A service will held at 2 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 21, at Covenant Funeral Service, Stafford Chapel, 1310 Courthouse Road, Stafford. A viewing will be held one hour prior to the service.
