Elizabeth R. Doerken

Elizabeth Ross "Betsy" Doerken, 75, of Montross passed away Saturday, March 22, 2014, in Newport News.

She was born June 17, 1938, to Bessie and Roy Ross and grew up in Arlington County. She traveled worldwide, attended Notre Dame of Maryland University, James Madison University and Staatliche Hoschschule für Musik in Saarbrücken, West Germany.

Betsy taught elementary school music and served as music supervisor in Loudoun County public schools for more than two decades. In 1989, she was a recipient of the Washington Post Agnes Meyer Outstanding Teacher of the Year Award.

She served as music director at Andrew Chapel United Methodist Church in Montross and at St. Peter's Episcopal Church in Oak Grove.

She worked as a part-time historic interpreter at Stratford Hall Plantation and as a volunteer at George Washington's Birthplace National Monument.

Betsy is survived by her husband, Bill Doerken; her daughters, Stephanie LaLumiere, Maura Vonasek and Wendy Norton; a niece, Deborah Owings; and her grandchildren, Caroline Vonasek, Hailey Vonasek, Erich LaLumiere and Jacob Yakoubi.

A funeral will be held at noon Friday, March 28, at Andrew Chapel United Methodist Church, 16340 Kings Highway (State Route 3), Montross. A viewing and visitation with the family will precede the service, beginning at 10:30 a.m.

There will also be a brief ceremony at the interment at noon Saturday, March 29, at Ebenezer Baptist Church cemetery, 20421 Airmont Road (State Route 719), Bluemont, VA 20135 (near Bloomfield).

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Montross Community Outreach Fund, Montross Ministerial Association, Andrew Chapel United Methodist Church, 16340 Kings Highway, Montross, 22520.
