Edward G. Thornton III

Edward G. Thornton III, 98, of Fredericksburg died Tuesday, Aug. 19, 2014, at Mary Washington Hospital.

He was born in Milford on Oct. 12, 1915, to Edward G. Thornton Jr. and Belle Gouldin Thornton. He is survived by his wife of 72 years, Louise G. Thornton.

Ed was a World War II veteran, Army Field Artillery, participating in Normandy, Battle of the Bulge, Hurtgen Forest and other significant battles in Europe. He was a skilled auto technician, starting his career at Blatt Chevrolet and owning Edd's Garage and a car dealership in Milford.

After the war, the family moved to Fredericksburg, where he was the service manager at Richmond Auto Parts. He later developed a statewide program for advanced auto mechanics, which he taught for many years at Stafford High School. After retirement, he and his wife started Mattaponi Antiques. He repaired and restored antique clocks and furniture. He could fix anything.

He was a founding member of the Fredericksburg Civil War Round Table, serving as treasurer for more than 40 years. He was also a volunteer fireman in Fredericksburg and a Scout leader for Boy Scout Troop 193.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by his sons, Edward G. Thornton IV and his wife, Janet, of Woodford and Bill Thornton and his wife, Linda, of Fredericksburg; his daughter, Lou Brent, also of Fredericksburg; his grandchildren, Jennifer Farrar and her husband, Chris, of Richmond, Stefanie Thornton of Milford and Will Thornton of Fredericksburg; and his great-grandchildren, Aidan and Nolan Huff and Christopher Farrar. He is also survived by a sister, Virginia T. Olsen of Raleigh, N.C. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by a sister, Ellen G. Thornton.

The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 28, at Covenant Funeral Service, Fredericksburg.

A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Aug. 29, at Culpeper National Cemetery.
