John H. Pitts

John Harris "Jack" Pitts, 76, beloved husband of Elaine Coley, passed away peacefully at his home on Monday, Sept. 1, 2014.

Born Oct. 11, 1937, in Fredericksburg, he graduated from James Monroe High School and served his country in the U.S. Air Force. Jack settled in his hometown and raised four children with his former wife, Edwina Shannon, working for The Free Lance-Star as a pressman and lithograph photographer. He retired as a pressman from Billingsley Printing & Engraving, after working his whole life in the Fredericksburg area.

Jack was an avid World War II and Civil War buff, a passion he got from his daddy. Together they found their own pieces of history with their metal detectors. He was a founding contributor to the Seminary Ridge Museum in Gettysburg, Pa. A lifelong Red Sox fan, Jack instilled that passion in all of his children. His love of the game was like no other.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Warren and Jurena Pitts, and a sister, Peggy "Sally" Graebner.

In addition to Elaine, Jack is survived by four children, Kathleen Mangold (Pete), John Pitts, Brian Pitts and Leslie Pitts; three brothers, Warren, Benny and Johnny Pitts; nine grandchildren, David, Matthew, Morgan, Jakob, Patrick, Brodie, Daniel, Adam and Elizabeth; aunts Phyllis and Anna Mae Jones; and several nieces and nephews.

Per Jack's wishes, in lieu of a service, cards or flowers, contributions may be made in his name to the Civil War Trust, Box 17686, Baltimore, MD 21298, civilwar.org.
