Deputy accused of alleged inappropriate behavior with a 16- and 17-year-old girl Date published: 4/27/2006
By BILL FREEHLING A former Caroline County sheriff’s deputy was charged Wednesday night with six felonies involving alleged inappropriate activity with two teenage girls. Michael K. Sheward, 30, is the second former member of the Caroline Sheriff’s Office to be charged within a week with crimes involving a young girl. Michael S. Brewbaker, a 34-year-old Ashland man, was charged April 20 in Hanover County with seven felony counts of taking indecent liberties with a child. Police say Brewbaker’s charges involve alleged sexual misconduct with a 17-year-old girl in 2005. Brewbaker and Sheward no longer work for the Caroline Sheriff’s Office. Brewbaker resigned and Sheward was fired after the charges were placed. In a written statement, Caroline Sheriff Tony Lippa said Sheward is accused of “alleged inappropriate behavior” with a 16- and 17-year-old girl on Monday. Lippa did not indicate what the specific behavior was or where it occurred. Lippa said his office learned of the accusations against Sheward on Wednesday afternoon and began investigating. Sheward was arrested and fired from the department when he arrived for work about 10 p.m. Wednesday. Sheward was charged with two counts each of indecent liberties with a child, child endangerment and abduction. He was given a $48,000 secured bond at the Pamunkey Regional Jail. I think it is appauling that people, who take an oath to uphold the laws of the state of Virginia, think they can get away with taking advantage of children, abusing their authority, and destroying a childs life like that. I was in the same situation as a child. I did not have the courage to do anything about it. I applaud these girls for standing up to make sure this doesn't happen to anyone else!
