John W. Scott Jr., Fredericksburg judge, dies

John W. Scott Jr., Fredericksburg’s Circuit Court judge for the past 12 years, died this afternoon after having surgery at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore.

Scott was the Fredericksburg area’s first black judge. He was a civil rights pioneer from the time he was a teenager and won a federal lawsuit for the right to attend James Monroe High School.

Scott is survived by his wife, Alda White, and three sons.
