Canadian teacher charged with Internet sex crimes in Stafford
Canadian teacher accused of making ill-fated stop in Fredericksburg for liaison with 13-year- old boy.

BY KEITH EPPS A stopover in the Fredericksburg area is lasting a lot longer than a Canadian man had planned. Richard John Doucet, 36, a teacher at a private school in the Montreal area, was arrested in Fredericksburg Thursday after he stopped to meet up with a 13-year-old boy, police said. The boy was actually Dumfries Detective John Chapman, who police said has been corresponding with Doucet via the Internet since mid-December. Doucet is charged in Stafford County with attempting to take indecent liberties with a child, using electronic devices to solicit a child and two counts of distributing child pornography, Sheriff’s spokesman Bill Kennedy said. Chapman regularly contacts suspected pedophiles from Stafford, where he works closely with Stafford Detective Daryl Wells. Doucet is also being investigated in Fredericksburg, Dumfries and Canada, police said. Doucet is accused of having several sexually explicit online conversations with Chapman. He also is accused of sending numerous child pornography pictures featuring boys to Chapman’s e–mail address. As part of the discussion, Kennedy said, Doucet had arranged to meet the “13-year-old boy” on Friday on his return from an education conference in Atlanta. Kennedy said Doucet told the boy he would drive to Fredericksburg after flying into Reagan National Airport. He checked into the Hilton Garden Inn Thursday. After Chapman got the word that Doucet was in town, Fredericksburg officers staked out the inn and took Doucet into custody as he was leaving to go to dinner. Fredericksburg police later raided Doucet’s motel room and seized a computer. That computer is being examined for possible criminal activity, city police spokeswoman Natatia Bledsoe said. Doucet is a teacher at the Selwyn House in Canada, a private Catholic school for boys. His arrest has been big news in Montreal, where the school he teaches at is well known and has recently gone through a sex scandal involving other teachers there. Doucet is being held in the Rappahannock Regional Jail under no bond.
